What my membership money does
We understand it can be unclear what a union actually does and if it is worth it financially. Beyond the fact that you’re joining an official organisation that represents you at all levels (including with production companies, Broadcasters, and even government), your membership pays for a core team at Bectu who support members, provide advice on contracts etc, and negotiate with our employers. You’re also paying for Bectu training sessions, other member benefits (see above), as well as newsletters/updates, and website costs to keep members informed. You can always ask us if you aren’t sure.
UTVU Committee members are fellow TV workers who volunteer to represent you, so all funds are directed to the Union.
Will my employer find out?
Bectu keeps its membership list completely confidential and doesn’t share that list with anyone. The only people who’ll know you’re a member outside of BECTU are the people you choose to tell yourself.
